Neptune: discovered in 23 September

Nepptune, the third-largest planet in the solar system, is the eighth and outermost planet from the Sun. Due to its extreme distance from Earth, it cannot be seen with the naked eye. When observed through a small telescope, it appears as a small, pale blue-green disk. It is symbolized by the symbol ♆.

The name Neptune is derived from the Roman god of the sea, whose Greek counterpart is Poseidon, the brother of Titan Cronus (Roman god Saturn) and Zeus (Roman god Jupiter). Neptune is the second planet to be discovered through a telescope. Its discovery in 1846 was a significant application of Newtonian physics and a notable achievement in celestial mechanics, which later became scientifically well-established (see below for the discovery of Neptune).

Neptune’s orbit is nearly circular, and as a result, its distance from the Sun changes very little during its approximately 164-year orbit. While some smaller objects like Pluto have orbits that can take them farther from the Sun than Neptune, Neptune’s highly elliptical orbit means that it is, on average, closer to the Sun than Pluto for about 20 years of each orbital period.
